Background by [link]

Lanoe George Hawker VC, DSO (30 December 1890 23
November 1916) was a British flying ace, with seven credited victories, during the First World War. He was the first British flying ace, and the third pilot to receive the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He was killed in a dog fight with the legendary German ace Manfred von Richthofen ("The Red Baron").

What a great painting. Most digital paintings tend to lack any kind of soul, but this one's so emotive. You've done the memory of Lanoe Hawker proud.

Lanoe Hawker flew the pants out of that obsolete machine. Richthofen's Albatross D.II was faster, more powerful and more heavily armed, but Hawker still took him on without a seconds hesitation. Richthofen fired more than 900 rounds and only managed to hit Hawker with one of them - an extremely lucky shot to the back of the head as Hawker attempted to break off, after he ran low on fuel. What a pilot.

killed by a stroke of luck - Richthofen's guns jammed at one moment, and that last bullet hit him in the head. Talk about a lucky shot.

I have long researched "The Hawker" (Lanoe and Harry) and of all the pictorial material this picture evokes more than any other the cruelty, the tragedy and the bravery of that obscenely wasteful conflict. Congratulations.

He was flying an effectively obsolete aircraft by the time he was killed.

And then the "Red Baron" was shot down by Arthur "Roy" Brown. Weird as because his name Arthur as in King Arthur. Because "Baron" means "Free Lord" so evidently the "Free lord" was shot down by the "King.

von Richthofen was shot down by Australian machine-gunners, not by Brown as was originally thought.

How do you know? Brown had the claim, as well as witnesses

Medical evidence (aka Richtofen's autopsy) shows that the bullet wound came from below and to the right, not from above.

So fascinating and detailed. The rabbit adds so much interest, oblivious to the conflict that has reached his shaded glen.
Agree with 'Somethingfake, and hope you will try more of these.

Don't stop making these, they're fantastic. Kind of wish I had some spare money on me, this is one of the few pictures I'd consider ordering a print.
